What Mercury actually is

Mercury builds the software you use to run company money — accounts, cards, payments, invoices, bookkeeping — while the money itself sits in a regulated American bank. It is the opposite of a traditional bank, where the deposits are safe but the software is fifteen years old.

Deposits are held at Choice Financial Group and Column N.A. and are FDIC-insured up to 5 million dollars, because the balance is spread across a network of banks so each slice stays under the 250,000-dollar limit.

In May 2026 Mercury received conditional approval from the OCC to become a federally chartered bank of its own, and raised 200 million dollars at a 5.2 billion valuation. It has been profitable for four consecutive years and serves more than 300,000 companies.

The cards view: physical Mastercard, unlimited virtual cards, and the IO credit card with 1.5% cashback.

The debit Mastercard is free for every team member and works with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Virtual cards are created in seconds, each with its own number and spending cap — one per subscription, per ad campaign, per contractor. The IO credit card returns 1.5% cashback on all spend, straight into the account, with no annual fee and no personal guarantee.

What it costs

The account, the transfers, the cards, invoicing and bill pay are free forever. The paid plans add administrative workflows, not the account.

For a flat $15 Mercury absorbs those fees instead, so the recipient gets the full amount. Mercury does not accept cash deposits and does not support Zelle.

Questions

Is Mercury a bank?

No. Mercury is a financial technology company. Accounts are held at Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., both FDIC members. In May 2026 Mercury received conditional OCC approval to become a chartered bank, with final approval expected no earlier than 2027.

Can I apply from outside the United States?

Yes. Mercury serves US companies founded by people anywhere in the world. Identity verification is done remotely. The company must be US-registered and have existing or planned US operations.

How long does approval take?

Most applications get an answer in under a week. If the compliance team asks follow-up questions — common for companies with non-resident owners — two weeks is normal.

What does it cost?

The account is free: no opening fee, no minimum balance, no monthly fee. Paid plans start at $29.90 per month with annual billing and add administrative features, not the account itself.

Are deposits insured?

Yes, up to 5 million dollars through the partner banks and their deposit networks. FDIC insurance covers the failure of an insured bank; it does not cover commercial disputes or account closure decisions.

What could get my application rejected?

A PO box or registered agent address, no website, a vague business description, no demonstrable link to the US market, inconsistencies between your application and your site, expired documents, or a 25% owner resident in a restricted country.
